Movement disorders can have a large impact on an individual’s functional ability. Following diagnosis, a person may experience cognitive, emotional, or behavioral changes in addition to the physical changes in his/her ability to control movement. Our occupational therapy services provide personalized care to help you analyze and solve problems related to performing everyday activities that can be complicated by progressive neurologic conditions like Huntington’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, as well as other movement disorders. The goal of our program is to ensure that you are able to perform tasks as safely and independently as possible and to help find ways to maintain your quality of life. We encourage therapy services even in the early stages of your diagnosis to help teach you strategies to maintain an active lifestyle.

Through this program, we’ll work with you and/or your loved one to:

  • help establish a daily routine
  • implement strategies to adapt self-care tasks like eating, grooming, dressing, and bathing
  • provide suggestions for ways to adopt household management or leisure activities
  • offer tips for fatigue management
  • address safety and fall prevention
  • develop home exercise programs for coordination, flexibility, and general fitness
  • connect you with community resources.

During our work together, we will include caregiver education and training, and discuss how to plan for caregiver relief. We understand the important role caregivers play in a person’s health and well-being and want to ensure that we focus on each person and family’s unique needs.

We will also help you plan ahead for the future so that you can best manage to live with a chronic condition.

During your visit, we will:

  • perform a full evaluation and assessment of your current level of performance with self-care, home management tasks, and your participation in leisure activities to determine our areas of focus
  • discuss your personal goals for therapy
  • educate you about potential concerns and/or areas of risk
  • provide you with adaptive strategies and self-management techniques for maximizing your independence
  • make recommendations for changes or help you to develop new skills.

Visits are offered in-home or in-clinic during your regular follow-up appointment with your doctor. Whether you’d prefer to see our therapist in the comfort of your home, or in the clinic on campus, we’ll work around your schedule to help provide services where and when you need them.
