Becoming a mother is a life-changing process that extends beyond the daily caregiving responsibilities. It’s a uniquely felt and lived experience, shaped by the world around us and the communities and people we’re connected to.
Our Maternal Health team celebrates motherhood in all its forms and recognizes that no two mothering journeys are the same. We are inclusive of all individuals who identify as a mother. As occupational therapists, we understand that the transition to motherhood—while often joyous and exciting—can also feel overwhelming and uncertain.
The transition to motherhood impacts our daily routines and activities, but its impact runs deeper, shifting how we see ourselves, the roles we hold, and the priorities we set.
Applying health promotion and mother-centered frameworks to occupational therapy practice, our program uniquely aims to collaborate with mothers to help them live life and experience motherhood to the fullest. Currently, our Maternal Health Services include:
Postpartum & Perinatal Support[MC1] [LS2]
Through individualized occupational therapy evaluation and treatment —provided in our clinic with the option for home visits as needed— we support mothers as they navigate the perinatal period, or the first year of their child’s life. We recognize that physical recovery, emotional adjustment, and changes in daily routines continue well beyond the early weeks and months after welcoming a baby, whether through birth, adoption, or surrogacy. Our team can:
- Assess mothers’ unique strengths, challenges and goals
- Develop personalized plans to enhance mental health, physical health, and overall well-being
- Help mothers return to and establish new routines for everyday activities
- Connect mothers with resources and strategies to support their transition into motherhood
Postpartum Home Recovery Support
Birthing individuals may experience pain or discomfort following vaginal birth or C-section. This can contribute to challenges and decreased independence with completing daily activities. Our occupational therapists can provide in-home evaluations and interventions to support their recovery and participation. Our team can:
- Assess how your home environment and daily routines impact healing and comfort
- Determine activity modifications and positioning techniques for tasks like lifting your baby, getting in and out of bed, and managing household responsibilities
- Recommend tools, equipment, and environmental solutions to reduce pain and support well-being and independence during recovery
Breastfeeding & Lactation Support
As both occupational therapists and Certified Lactation Consultants (CLCs), our team supports mothers with both the mechanics of feeding and the confidence to do so comfortably. Our occupational therapists develop personalized plans to meet a mother’s breastfeeding goals and to support the breastfeeding partnership between mother and baby. Our team can:
- Assess and help treat common issues like sore nipples, engorgement, and low milk supply
- Provide ergonomic techniques for protecting the mother’s body during breastfeeding and/or pumping
- Help mothers and their support persons establish routines and habits that enable successful breastfeeding and pumping
- Support mothers to confidently breastfeed and/or pump in a variety of real-life settings, including outside of the home and when returning to work
