Each child has a unique personality and way of participating in their world. They may struggle when they find a mismatch between their skills and the demands placed on them by their environment whether it is at school, home, or in the community. Our occupational therapy services seek to enable each child to be the best version of themself through an individualized approach.
A child who sees WUSTL Occupational Therapy may experience a variety of difficulties on a day-to-day basis including:
- Initiating and completing morning and evening routines
- Dressing, bathing, eating, or grooming self
- Starting and completing chores
- Playing including sharing toys, following directions, and taking turns
- Safety awareness
- Locating and organizing items
- Following through with written or verbal directions
- Tabletop tasks including drawing, writing, and cutting
- School tasks including:
- Remaining seated during class, work, or homework tasks
- Completing written assignments
- Bringing items to and from school
HOW OUR PROGRAM WORKS
• Assess how the person, task, and environment factors interact together
• Utilize a collaborative coaching approach between the therapist, patient, and family
• Make recommendations for changes and educate patient and family with adaptive strategies and self-management techniques for maximizing independence and transition into next steps between childhood, adolescent and adulthood
• Educate on ways to support within daily setting
