Vision plays a vital role in maintaining your safety and independence in daily activities and leisure interests in your home and work environments. There are four main parts of vision: how clearly you see, how much you see around you, how well you see in different lights, and how well you see colors. These factors work together to provide a picture of what we see in our world. A slight change in any of these parts of vision can significantly impact a person’s lifestyle. Low vision means a person’s vision is not fully restored with glasses, contact lenses, or surgeries. It can be caused by a variety of conditions, including stroke, brain injury, and age-related eye diseases.
Our occupational therapy team works closely with individuals to identify ways to maximize participation and satisfaction within their daily routines. There is a wide range of strategies, modifications, and adaptive devices that can allow an individual with low vision or blindness to access their world more easily. Our team creates a plan for each person that prioritizes their needs and goals.
Occupational therapy interventions may include:
- Education on your diagnosis, risk factors, and intervention options
- Optical device training
- Environmental modification and adaptive strategies for self-care and home management tasks
- Tactile marking for home appliances
- Support for reading and writing
- Training on safe mobility, including visual scanning
- Strategies to decrease visual discomfort and visual fatigue
- Home safety and lighting recommendations
- Education on community resources
If you live within our 30-mile radius, you can be seen in your home or community. Working with an occupational therapist in your home and community is valuable because you can practice strategies in your natural environments. Examples include cooking in your own kitchen and shopping in your familiar grocery store.
